American Starfleet: Justification

I am working on a new American Starfleet book! This one is a thoughtful science spaceship story about investigations and conflict between characters. The human spaceship Justification is tasked with making peace with the asalai race of aliens in the Trappist system in the year 2242. At night, they work at making peace. The scientists, however, also have the memory of living in the year 2026 at the University of Iowa by day. Which is real? What are these aliens? Are they benevolent? Malevolent? Hostile? I am working hard on the project.
